I guess I'd like to be a lifestyle/editorial illustrator. I like drawing cute girls in cute clothes--it's fun and it doesn't (completely) break my heart to change things from the original vision. But I've never been to art school and I don't have a portfolio or a clue about anything. I suppose the next step is to ask the advice of an art director after I have a few sample pieces.

Please, please crit away. I'm particularly worried about the white gradients--I think they look muddy most of the time, but I wanted soft white lighting for a 70's magazine vibe and the halo.

I am so lacking in crit, which is probably fine three months after the fact. :) The white gradients are pretty, glowy and not muddy at all. I love the details on the items in her bike basket.

well, you got your portfolio here and on your site and it says "Angie Wang is a good illustrator and a great comicartist". if i would be an art-director and you work for my company, i would be useless in saying how you have to illustrate something, because what you do is right.

Awww, thanks! Haha, you'd be my ideal art director then.

I can't offer too much advice about portfolios, having never put one together myself, but try to show some variety in them, while still making it seem cohesive and individual. Also, presentation counts for a bit.

I'm not going to crit you instead you need to begin entering into shows all over the place. Pick your faves and go from there. There is plenty of info on how to put portfolios together. I'm putting my metals into one and am using about 10-20 pictures. If you have more questions there is always the internet and just ask. I'd always be delighted in any help necessary.

Make a physical porfolio of prints (Because magazines want to see something in their hand).

Don't link to deviantart! So unprofessional. Instead, get a website if you have to.

Um, don't be shy either. Just walk in and ask to talk to art directors, find out what type of art they like, what they want to see. Get cards and follow up.
